Introduction
Symptomatic gall stone disease is common cause of pain abdomen and laparoscopic cholecystectomy is gold standard treatment. Port site infection is rare complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy but still affects the benefits of minimal access surgery. The aim of this study is to evaluate the factors responsible for port site infection.
Methods
A retrospective study was conducted in 334 patients with diagnosis of symptomatic gall stone disease admitted for laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Nobel Medical College, Biratnagar. Port site infections in terms of surgical site infection if present were recorded and wound swab sent for culture and sensitivity.
Results
Total 334 patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy of which 277 were female (82.93%) and 57 were male (17.06%). Age range of the patients in the study was 15-82 years with maximum number of patients were in age group of 51-60 years (23.65%).
Total 12 patients (3.59%) had port site infection. Out of this 8/277 were female (2.88%) and 4/57 were male (7.01%).Port site infection was predominantly observed in acute cholecystitis 4/40 (10%) and with spillage of bile, stones, pus 8/30 (26.6%). Port site infection was common in umbilical port 11/12 (91.6%) through which gall bladder was taken out. Most of the port site infection was superficial 10/12 (83.3%) with microorganisms grown in 8/12(66.66%).
Conclusion
Port site infection in laparoscopic cholecystectomy was common in male patient, associated with acute cholecystitis and spillage of bile, stones, pus. It was common in the port which was used for gall bladder extractions and most of the infections were superficial with various microorganisms.
