Comparison Of Quality Of Life After Laparoscopic Versus Open Appendectomy

Introduction: Acute appendicitis is a common surgical condition. Laparoscopic appendectomy is now the preferred surgical method and is also on the rise. There are only a few studies which evaluate the gastrointestinal quality of life in patients who underwent laparoscopic and open appendectomy. We aim to compare health-related quality of life using the gastrointestinal quality of life index (GIQLI) between the patients who had undergone laparoscopic appendectomy and open appendectomy.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Patients who had undergone laparoscopic and open appendectomy during the study period were included. Participants were contacted by telephone for evaluation of their quality of life by one of the co-authors.
Result: Sixty-four cases were included in the study. Fifty-three patients had laparoscopic appendectomy and 11 patients had open appendectomy. Mean age, gender distribution and duration following the procedure were comparable between the two groups. Mean total GIQLI were also comparable between the groups (95.80 in the laparoscopic group vs 97.91 in the open group, p = 0.857).
Conclusion: There was no significant difference in GIQLI in long term follow up among patients who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy and open appendectomy.
