Age and Sequence of Permanent Tooth Eruption in Children
Abstract
Introduction: Tooth eruption timing is important in estimating the developmental age of children.
Determining the eruption timing as well sequence of eruption of teeth assist in diagnosing the early,
normal or delayed dental development. It not only helps in developing a standard reference for
the particular population in which the study was done but also allows for international comparison
and find out the acceptable margins of variation. This in turn again affects the preventive and
curative oral healthcare. The study was aimed to identify the age and sequence of permanent
tooth eruption in children.
Methods: Cross-sectional study was done in children studying in different schools of Lalitpur
district from March 2018 to October 2018. Examination was done using mouth mirror under
natural light. The teeth present in the mouth were noted down and chart thus made was analysed
using SPSS 16 and Probit transformation.
Results: The first permanent tooth to erupt in the oral cavity was found to be mandibular first
molar at the age of 5 years 8 months and the last was maxillary second molar (11 years 8 months).
In mandible, first premolar preceded canine in eruption whereas in maxilla it was first premolar
followed by canine and second premolar.
Conclusion:The tendency of eruption of permanent teeth was earlier in females than in males.
No significant difference in eruption age between the right and left side of the oral cavity was
observed.
