Temporal Encephalocele Secondary to Temporo Mandibular Joint Arthoplasty: A Rare Complication.
Abstract
Ankylosis is the fbrous or osseous fusion of the mandibular condyle to the base of the skull which manifests clinically as limited mouth opening. The surgical technique for the management of temporo-mandibular joint ankylosis is considered as one of the most difcult among the head and neck surgeries just because of associated serious complications. The major complications are; severe bleeding, facial nerve injury, reankylosis, occlusal disharmony, facial asymmetry, perforation of external auditory canal, etc. The perforation of base of skull and temporal enchephalocele is one of the rare and serious complications of arthoplasty. Such complications can be optimized with the uses of piezoelectric bone scalpel and appropriate surgical techniques. The management of the encephalocele and ankylosis is craniotomy, excision, duroplasty and temporalis muscle interpositional arthoplasty. This paper presents a case report of management of iatrogenically perforated of base of skull and temporal encephalocele after TMJ arthoplasty.
